The situation

SupplyPoint designs innovative automated point-of-use inventory management systems developed and manufactured in the UK. Prior to this project, NSF Controls supplied the client with standard solenoid requirements for its ranges of inventory control equipment. Production lines, ward-based medical consumables, PPE equipment and office supplies are some of the sectors served by SupplyPoint.

For this project, the product concept provides an answer to efficient inventory control in a factory environment. It is a cabinet that offers a user configurable solution to parts management and is particularly suited to industrial and automotive markets.

Its aim is to provide a secure, recordable location for production parts and tools, minimising downtime and optimising inventory levels, leading to substantial operational cost savings.   

Solution offered by way of a combination of robust steel constructed cabinets, high strength locks and optional level control from SupplyPoint software. Additionally, all items are hidden from view, reducing the risk of unauthorised removal.

The challenge

The client wanted to ensure the cabinet was secure enough to prevent unauthorised entry without using tools and specified that no solenoids, wires or other elements should be housed in the drawer. The space available between the drawers had to be used for concealment thus allowing maximum use of available space for stock control.

Also, simplicity was essential for ease of product assembly.

The solution

By assessing the dictating factors of the application, such as the permitted space envelope, NSF Controls identified the open frame flapper solenoid as a reliable and cost effective means of actuation.

The permitted space envelope for the solenoid was a vital consideration in this case. The low profile of an open frame flapper coupled with the characteristic of high output over a short stroke, made it appropriate for the application. 

Custom designed and manufactured

NSF Controls provided a method of mounting the solenoid with a custom designed and manufactured supporting bracket to provide rigidity.

In its locked state, the solenoid latches against the lip of the drawer and when activated (energised) it drops below the lip allowing the drawer to be opened. The user opens the location, obtains the required items and pushes the lid down to close and lock.

The results and future

The product’s versatility means a single unit can handle the storage and control of tiny items like screws to bulky items such as safety shoes. This is made possible by model configurations including lockable compartments within the drawers. NSF Controls also supplied the locking method for these compartments, comprising low profile solenoids operating a plunger.

Now available in six different cabinet sizes the unit can be configured to provide up to 432 secure locations in one cabinet.
