About the project

In this instance, the use of a traditional permanently latched solenoid conflicted with other magnetically controlled systems in use. As a result, NSF Controls developed the mechanically latched bi-directional tubular solenoid.

Versatile, lightweight and reliable with a lifespan of 10 million actuations in each direction, this component can typically be utilised by military, security and medical markets.

To my surprise and delight NSF was willing to create almost anything I wanted, so we set to work on a design that suited my needs, yet was not awkward to manufacture. About the project

For this one-off project, a specialist tubular solenoid was created as part of the electro-mechanical system for a reproducing piano.

A set of 88 solenoids is used to actuate the piano keys, with fast repeats, subtle musical control and complete mechanical silence being crucial.

About the project

For the global leaders in waste compaction technology, NSF Controls developed a tubular solenoid for longer strokes and high holding force applications. It produces a starting force in excess of 45 Newtons over a stroke of 30mm.

The holding force when closed is in excess of 90 Newtons. This powerful, heavy-duty solenoid can be sealed to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture, making it suitable for tough environments.
